By Célia Abe Oi A ceremony on the first day of December, at 7:00 p.m., marked the opening of the exhibition “Personalities and the Museum”. This is a collection of photos that record the visits of different authorities to the Historical Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil. The event, organized by the Museum’s Administrative Committee and curated by Ayako Oiwa, who holds a degree in Cultural History from Ochanomizu University (Tokyo), where she studied Museology, among other subjects, aims to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Museum’s founding. Opened in 1978 as one of the important initiatives to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil, the Historical Museum was built by Bunkyo and resulted from the concern of the first generation (Issei) to preserve the long and difficult journey of Japanese immigrants on Brazilian soil. With the exhibition space initially built on the 7th and 8th floors of the Bunkyo Building in 2000, the Museum gained an additional floor, with the exhibition focusing on the Japanese-Brazilian community in the post-war period. Bringing together one of the most important collections on Japanese immigration in Latin America, the Museum is maintained by Bunkyo. Over the course of its three decades of operation, it has become the most important reference for those interested in learning about the history of Japanese immigration in Brazil. It is also a reference for visitors from abroad, especially those from Japan, who wish to pay homage to their ancestors, the pioneers of immigration. Thus, over these 30 years, the Museum has collected a long list of national and international visitors who have visited the exhibition spread over three floors. Not only celebrities, but also countless visits from schools and students, anonymous tourists from different parts of Brazil and abroad, and elderly Japanese immigrants accompanied by their children and grandchildren interested in telling their story. The exhibition catalog will be on sale for R$3.00. In addition, during the exhibition period, the Museum Guide will have a promotional price of R$20.00 (Portuguese) and R$18.00 (Japanese). The exhibition “The Personalities and the Museum” is produced by Bunkyo and the Historical Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil, and is sponsored by Trendy Turismo and supported by Fujifilm, the Center for Japanese-Brazilian Studies and Editora Kojiro.
