J-POP

Exhibition
In Person
Lumenhouse Exhibition Space
47 Beaver Street Brooklyn, New York, United States of America

Date: July 11, 2009 – Aug. 2, 2009

Lumenhouse exhibition space is proud to present J-POP is a summer exhibition featuring four Japanese contemporary artists: Yuko Oda, Hiroki Otsuka, Mariko Suzuki and Yuko Suzuki.

J-POP looks at a new Japanese aesthetic of playful invention from the material and imagined realities of everyday life. Yuko Oda’s work explores a hybrid and supernatural world of insects and nature through both her drawing and 3D animation works. Hiroki Otsuka’s manga styled paintings depict a fantasy of Hans Bellmer-esque girls in rapturous forms. Mariko Suzuki’s intricate ink and acrylic drawings depict a Ukiyo-e like landscape of an imaginary dystopia. Yuko Suzuki’s wood cutouts depict a world through a child’s perspectives and a narrative of innocence and resistance to conform.
