Lecture series “Japan in each one of us”

Conference/Presentation
In Person

Date: Aug. 18, 2008 – Aug. 21, 2008

Lecture series “Japan in each one of us” This initiative will address topics to help understand the impact of Japanese immigration in the country. From August 18 to 21, a lecture series will be held in São Paulo as part of the research project for the exhibition “Japan in each one of us”. The free initiative will address key topics to help understand the impact of Japanese immigration in Brazil, focusing on the dimensions of sharing cultural practices and social experiences resulting from one hundred years of coexistence and interaction. Professionals who are prominent in their fields will discuss artistic, technical and economic legacies, as well as the political insertion of Japanese-Brazilians, in order to provide an understanding of the transformations that have affected both immigrants and their descendants, as well as other Brazilians. The lecture series coincides with the formal transfer of the Ashiato Project database, which includes 210,000 names of Japanese immigrants who came to Brazil between 1908 and 1973, to the Historical Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil and the Immigrant Memorial, as well as the launch of the exhibition catalog. The project, sponsored by BANCO REAL and developed by the Association for the Celebration of the Centennial of Japanese Immigration in Brazil, collected material over a two-year period by volunteers who transcribed the names on boarding passes from kanji (Japanese ideograms) to the Roman alphabet. During the exhibition, which was on display from May 21 to July 18 at the Main Building, visitors had access to consultation terminals, and considered this project to be one of the main highlights of the exhibition. To participate in the event, simply go to the Bunkyo (Brazilian Association of Japanese Culture and Social Assistance) headquarters on the days of the lectures, which will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The address is Rua São Joaquim, 381 – Liberdade (near the São Joaquim subway station).
