Visible & Invisible: A Hapa Japanese American History

Did you know that the first Nisei were mixed race? And did you know that by the 2020 census, the majority of Japanese Americans will be multiracial/multiethnic? Come find out more about these two very important issues at the new Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj) exhibit: Visible and Invisible: A Hapa Japanese American History

Opening March 19, this important new exhibit explores a version of Japanese American history that highlights the experiences of mixed-race, mixed-ethnic families and individuals, from the earliest pioneers, to the present-day community. Through photos, historical artifacts, and multimedia images, this exhibit explores the diverse, dynamic, and complex history of the mixed-race and mixed-roots Japanese American experience, both locally and beyond.

This exciting exhibit is curated by Cindy Nakashima and Fred Liang, with participation from local San Jose area families.

The original Visible & Invisible exhibit was a collaboration between the Hapa Japan Database Project, the USC Center for Japanese Religions and Culture, and the Japanese American National Museum, and showed at JANM in 2013.
